POPPY SEED

Dorothy’s sojourn down the famed yellow brick road led her past a field of poppies where she, after inhaling their heady fragrance, promptly fell into a deep sleep. Proving there is (at least some) truth in fiction, poppy seed’s species, somniferum, means “to bring sleep” in Latin.

The familiar blue seeds that grace everything from bagels to baked goods are harvested from the same plant that produces opium. But don’t worry—poppy seeds have no narcotic effect and simply add a pleasant, nutty crunch to your creations.

Spice Islands’ poppy-seeking expedition didn’t include the fabled Oz, but it did lead to picturesque Australia, where poppy seed is considered among the world’s finest.
