5 Ways to Up Your Pie Game

Step aside, turkey. Everyone is really waiting for pie, the true star of the Thanksgiving show. Using these tips, take your holiday desserts to the next level. No one needs to know how simple they are to pull off.

1. Make It a Mini

For a smaller holiday gathering, consider letting everyone have their own individual pie. These Mini Apple Pies enhanced with our Saigon cinnamon are baked into half-pint Mason jars to up the cuteness factor. Or, fit sugar cookie dough into a muffin tin for the base of these Strawberry-Rhubarb Tarts and play around by replacing the topping with a seasonal fruit combo. Another option is to add any type of pie filling onto half of a small oval-shaped piece of pie dough; close for a moon shape and pinch the sides of the dough to secure. Bake until the pie dough is golden for hand pies.

2. Enhance It With Booze

What's better than a pecan pie? One with a hint of liqueur in it, like this Kahlua Pecan Pie recipe, which balances the coffee liqueur's rich flavor with undertones of vanilla. Bring this rich Chocolate Mousse Pie up a notch with a few tablespoons of Crème de Menthe, or add any liqueur into the base of D.I.Y. whipped cream and dollop onto your favorite pie.

3. Add a Sprinkle of Salt

Just a tiny bit of our sea salt scattered over a pie achieves two results: It turns dessert into the sweet-salty combo that so many people crave and also adds a slight textural crunch. Use this trick for any recipe, even transforming a regular apple pie into a Salted Caramel Glazed Apple Pie by stirring ½ teaspoon sea salt into the caramel glaze.

4. Go With a Twist on the Traditional

Surprise guests with a take on traditional holiday pies. Instead of pumpkin pie, opt for this Pumpkin Ice Cream Pie, which swaps out the usual custardy filling for one enhanced with ice cream. (This can be served straight from the freezer, freeing up oven space on the big day.) Or, instead of serving straightforward pecan pie, amp it up to pecans, walnuts, and almonds in this 3 Nut Pie recipe.

5. Get Creative With Dough

Instead of topping this Old World Linzertorte with lattice strips of pie crust, consider using shapes. Find Thanksgiving or fall-centric cookie cutters and press the dough into desired shapes. Place over the filling and bake for a more unique pie created with the same amount of effort. To totally wow your Thanksgiving guests, you can even combine two of the tips above. Add a dash of sea salt to a charming round of mini pies, and impress everyone with your twist on a sweet treat.
