Eating The Best of What's Fresh - Apples

It might come as a surprise to learn that the humble apple, as all-American as its namesake pie, turns out to have exotic origins. Other than the crab apple native to the United States, most other varieties came from the Middle East through Europe to land on our shores in the 17th century. Currently, fewer than 100 kinds of apple are produced commercially in the United States, but in the 1800s, there were up to 14,000 variations thriving on American soil.

In pie form, especially, this non-native fruit is a national favorite. For a balance of tart and sweet when baking, Pink Lady and Honey Crisp varieties are top choices. In developing your signature recipe to share with friends and family, or to beat the competition in a pie contest, play around with different amounts of cinnamon and nutmeg.

As fall approaches, a quick trip to a local orchard for apple-picking is a great way to score snacks for adult and school lunches. Make sure they're firm, free of bruises and holes, and when you get them home, store them in a cool dark place. They also do well when placed in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Some sweet and widely available varieties to try are Honey Crisp, Fuji, Golden Delicious, and Gala. Just slice and top with peanut or almond butter for the ultimate crowd-pleasing treat.

The apple is also hearty enough to come to your rescue in terms of meal preparation, whether paired with meat, as in Apple Marinated Stuffed Pork Chops, or blended into Butternut Squash Soup with Thyme Butter. Eat it whole, slice it as a snack, or enjoy it as part of a meal or a sweet treat. Whatever your pleasure, the apple is currently at its peak, so get out there and enjoy!
