Happy National Sandwich Day

November 3rd is National Sandwich Day—yes, that's a thing! Since sandwiches have been a part of our daily lives basically since kindergarten, why wouldn't we

commemorate our lifelong love of this tasty handheld icon?

Let us then celebrate what makes a sandwich truly great. Anyone can slap some lunch meat between two pieces of white bread, but for a sandwich to achieve its full potential, choose each ingredient and element with care. Add a special something with handmade spreads and dressings like spicy mustard (simple to make with freshly ground mustard seeds and a little vinegar and water) or a mayonnaise flavored with herbs (basil, tarragon, and fines herbes are favorites), and match the flavors in your fillings to your spread. For example, a Cajun remoulade mayonnaise makes a great addition to a po' boy, while an Italian herb-spiked vinaigrette is fantastic drizzled on a salami hero.

When it comes to fillings, anything from land and sea is fair game. A deli-style salad filling is easy to whip up ahead of time, ready to stuff into rolls and wraps at a moment's notice. Some of our go-tos include Deconstructed Crab Roll, Lemon Pepper Tuna Salad, Salmon Spinach Panini, Curried Chicken Salad, and Turkey Apricot Salad.

Classic American deli-style sandwiches are not the only game in town. While the eponymous Earl of Sandwich—said to have invented the lunchtime staple—might have been as English as a cucumber tea sandwich with the crusts cut off, there's a whole world of flavor to explore between two slices of bread. Some of our favorites from around the globe include the Vietnamese Banh Mi on a crusty baguette, a hot pressed Cuban Panini, a saucy Italian Meatball Sandwich, or a cool Tuscan Tuna Sandwich.

Inspired? That's the beauty of National Sandwich Day, a great occasion to think outside the (lunch) box about the things we eat every day.
