In Praise of Winter Soups

The cold months are upon us, and nothing is more satisfying than a piping hot bowl of soup to soothe your winter soul. Shake up your routine with a few new takes on soup classics.

Creole Sausage and Lentil Soup

A unique twist on a Southern specialty, this soup uses lentils, which cook in half the time of other beans. Add in spicy sausage slices, diced tomatoes, and bell pepper for a Cajun-themed bowl of spicy comfort. For a little more pizzazz, stir in 1 or 2 teaspoons of Spice Islands® Louisiana Style Cajun Seasoning.

Butternut Squash Soup with Thyme Butter

There's no better time for some winter squash love than during its prime season. The sweetness of apples adds a little magic to this soup, along with a kick of cayenne and ground ginger. A slice of thyme butter on top adds a touch of creamy lusciousness.

Bean Soup Mix

This bean soup mix is great to have on hand as a pantry staple, and it can also make a great portable and edible gift. Divide the dry beans into mason jars and top each with the spice mix contained in cheesecloth. Tie with a string and a notecard outlining the recipe. Keep on hand for last-minute meals or presents in a pinch.

Beef Vegetable Soup

There's nothing more comforting in cold weather than a steaming pot of Beef Vegetable Soup. Added bonus: As the beef chunks, veggies and potatoes simmer in flavorful broth for an hour or so, your home will take on a delightful and comforting aroma.

Slow Cooker Corn Chowder

Slow cookers steal the show with simmering soups, like this corn chowder. Just add bacon, potatoes, corn, broth and spices in the morning before work, and come home to an almost-done dinner. Stir in milk and shredded cheese to melt, and your hearty and delicious weeknight dinner is served.

French Onion Soup

Bring the comfort of a bistro straight to your home with this French Onion Soup. The onions are caramelized and enhanced with Spice Islands® garlic powder before mixing with beef consommé. Each bowl is topped with a baguette slice and heaped with Swiss cheese before a stint in the broiler to melt. Hello, bubbly cheese just ready to be devoured.

Honduran Black Bean Chili

Shake up your chili routine with a Latin American spin. A mix of kidney beans and black beans trumps the usual humble pinto used in chili. Utilizing chopped turkey, this hearty soup is spiked with the warm flavors of coriander, cumin and cilantro. And serving up to eight people, this is just the chili recipe to feed a crowd.
