Pumpkin Spice Forever: A Love Story

The Great Pumpkin returns! When the air turns crisp and the leaves begin to fall, pumpkin appears everywhere you turn, from lattes to beer and everything in between. We love pumpkin as much as the person ahead of us in the coffee shop drive-through, but it's really pumpkin spice that has us smitten. A sweet, comforting blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cloves, Pumpkin Pie Spice just feels like fall. Try sprinkling it on just-popped popcorn, on warm nuts, on baked sweet potatoes, on buttery baked apples or even shaken into a tipsy pumpkintini.

While there are plenty of pumpkin treats to choose from on store shelves and cafe menus, the most delicious might be the ones you make at home. Quality spices and wholesome ingredients are key. Allspice, Saigon cinnamon, cloves, orange peel, vanilla, ginger (both ground and crystallized), and nutmeg all play very well with pumpkin. Try grinding whole spices—especially allspice and cloves—to increase intensity and fragrance. And since it's all about the (pumpkin) spice, make sure you choose products that are impeccably sourced and stored in airtight containers that keep them fresh and flavorful.

If you're ready to go all-out pumpkin, you can't do better than Pumpkin Pie Chocolate Chip Pancakes—basically dessert for breakfast, but we won't tell. For actual dessert, try Orange Cream Cheese Frosted Pumpkin Bars, Pumpkin Spice Pound Cake, or Pumpkin Bread Pudding, studded with orange peel and cranberries. The best part? You can make them while cozy in your PJs and enjoy a sweet, earthy fragrance that fills your home.
