Queen for a (Mother's) Day

Three hundred and sixty-four days of the year, it's all about what she can do for you, but Mother's Day is your chance to give back. What's the perfect gift for the woman who gave the world to you? Something delicious you make yourself!

From the moment she wakes up in the morning to her last bites of delectable dessert, here are ideas for treating the most important woman in your life. Make sure that for at least one day of the year, she doesn't have to lift a finger — and don't forget to buy flowers.

Breakfast in Bed

Spending a lazy Sunday morning in bed with the newspaper and a beautifully set tray of decadent breakfast treats is a fine start to a fabulous Mother's Day. Set your alarm to make show-stopping Stuffed Chocolate Hazelnut French Toast, a dish that makes a statement but comes together quickly. Top with fresh raspberries and a dusting of powdered sugar to set a plate as pretty as she is.

For something savory, a Beau Monde Frittata easily makes the trip from skillet to bedside, and the flavor combo of seasonal leeks with rich mushrooms and Fontina cheese will have her swooning. Don't forget a special beverage — how about an Iced Chai or a Grilled Bloody Mary?

Easy Breezy Mother's Day Sunday Picnic

If the day promises to be pretty, there's nothing more fun and festive than getting the whole family together for a picnic. Bring games for outdoor play and let mom enjoy some sunshine and a gentle breeze without having to do a thing. Smoked Paprika Hummus is great for snacking with some fresh crudite or pita chips. For the main event, Spicy Fried Chicken is delicious at room temp and easily feeds a hungry crowd. A big bowl of Picnic Potato Salad and freshly baked White Cheddar and Thyme Biscuits round out the feast.

For dessert, small jars of Caramel Budino with Sea Salt Caramel Sauce packed up in individual portions are much more special than the usual cookies or brownies — a great way to show how much you care. And juice boxes are great for the kids, but grown-ups will enjoy a frosty glass of homemade Fruity Sangria or springtime Rhubarb Punch.

Wine and Dine Her

Wow your favorite lady with a fancy French dinner — it doesn't have to be hard to make. Start off with an easy but elegant appetizer — Asparagus Crepe with Citrus Vinaigrette. Follow up with Grilled Steak with Béarnaise Butter and keep the side dish simple — Garlic Oven Fries can be prepped ahead and popped into the oven just before dinner. Pair dinner with her favorite wines and end the meal with made-ahead Creme Brulee and a rich and boozy Hot Chocolate Toddy.

Eggs, bacon, pancakes and cereal might be what comes to mind when you think about a traditional breakfast. In Vietnam, however, the day begins with bright and nourishing pho — bowls of broth, a tangle of rice noodles and an accompanying plate of fresh bean sprouts, slices of lime and jalapeno, purple basil, scallions and cilantro.
