Ring in the New Year with These Foolproof Party Plans

The countdown is on: 10, nine . . . time to plan your New Year's Eve party! Before you know it, 2015 will be coming to an end, and you'll want to ring in 2016 with style. Instead of fretting over the best place to be at midnight, why not throw your own fête? Pick a theme, then make a guest list and start planning your menu. With some creative flair and a few simple recipes, you'll easily put together an affair to remember.

Mad Men

Encourage guests to dress in their mid-century finest, and decorate with foil streamers and kitschy noisemakers. Go back in time with a Mad Men-era menu of retro appetizers like candied pepper pecans, sweet and tangy cocktail sausages, and cinnamon rum glazed meatballs. And obviously, martinis.

Glam

What to wear? Lamé, metallic, pearls and bling, darling. Decorate with glass vases filled with faux pearls and shimmery candles, and put on the ritz with over-the-top, luxurious bites. This is the night for lobster rolls, Brie with caramelized onions and fresh oysters on the half shell. Fill big bowls with chile popcorn sprinkled with edible gold dust, and make sure the champagne flows freely all night.

Midnight

Black tie, black candles, black balloons and confetti set the scene for a sophisticated evening. Plan the menu around ingredients as dark as midnight: Think squid ink pasta, black lentils, forbidden rice, black quinoa, black sesame seeds and black mission figs to get your ideas going. Plan a big, festive feijoada a Brasileira for a deep, dark and exotic centerpiece to the evening. What to drink? Black Russians and Irish stout, of course.
