Savory Is Our Jam

From our very first peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the world conditions us to automatically think "sweet" when we think "jam." There's no reason to keep our imaginations packed up in the grade school lunch box, though. There's a great, big world of savory preserves, jams and jellies to explore.

From relishes and marmalades to accompany grilled meats, to jams and preserves that are the perfect pairing for cheese, the only thing limiting you is your own imagination. Enjoy getting in the kitchen to whip up new and inventive homemade condiments? Next time the DIY urge strikes, find out how sweet it is to go savory.

Bacon Onion Marmalade

Slowly cook down sliced onions and minced bacon into a thick, glossy paste. Rustic spices like bay leaves and rosemary are the perfect pairing for this jam, and a splash of balsamic vinegar or red wine brings even more umami to the table. Serve with grilled lamb chops or steak.


Tomato Jam

Warm spices like cinnamon and clove turn tomato jam into an exotic treat. This is fantastic with sharp cheddar or smeared on a decadent grilled cheese.

Roasted Garlic Confit

For the ultimate in umami, simmer roasted garlic cloves with Italian Herb Seasoning in olive oil until the garlic melts into a spreadable jam. Enjoy with roast chicken or tossed into buttered pasta.

Sriracha Pepper Jelly

Simmer fresh sweet garden peppers with honey and a pinch of crushed pepper and a shake of Sriracha spicy seasoning. Drizzle over grilled shrimp or use it to add a pop of sweet spice to your favorite quesadilla.

Apple Ginger Chutney

Dice apples, and simmer with shallots, mustard seeds, and crystallized ginger to create a relish that's divine with roast pork and a classic pairing with sharp cheeses, too.
