Warm 'n Boozy: This Year's Best Hot Cocktails

By: Andrea Lynn

When there's a chill in the air, nothing quite hits the spot like curling up on the couch and sipping from a warm drink. Snuggle up to these boozy beverages this winter and call it a cozy night.

Hot Chocolate Toddy

Like the best desserts, this sweet-spicy-savory treat achieves a satisfying balance to please even the most sophisticated of palates. The milky blend of cocoa, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, sweetened by sugar that can be varied in amount to suit your taste, is best topped with brandy-spiked whipped cream for an adults-only treat.

Warm Cranberry Sipper

In a pot on the stovetop, simmer together cranberry juice, orange juice, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, water, and sugar for 10 minutes, as the recipe instructs. Pour into mugs, stirring in 2 ounces of plain vodka or a fruit-flavored vodka, like orange or cranberry, into each portion. Garnish with fresh cranberries to float on top, if desired.

Hot Buttered Rum

Warm 3 cups of water in a small pot on the stovetop, along with 2 Spice Islands® Cinnamon Sticks, and 1 teaspoon Spice Islands® Whole Cloves. If desired, add 1 tablespoon of our Crystalized Ginger , too. Let mixture simmer for about 10 minutes. Carefully pass through a strainer to remove spices, discarding them. Add about 1½ ounces to 2 ounces of rum to each mug along with ½ tablespoon maple syrup, topping with the hot spiced water. For more richness, finish with a thin slice of butter and serve.

Mulled Cranberry Spiced Wine

Having a holiday gathering? This mulled wine is the answer to your party prayers. Place all the ingredients, including a red burgundy wine, cranberry juice cocktail, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and more into a slow cooker. Let the mixture simmer on low heat for 2 hours and use a slotted spoon to remove the cloves and cinnamon stick. Guests will be drawn directly to the aromatic drink as soon as they walk in the door, so allow them to serve themselves.

Pumpkin Pie Cocktail

Our homemade Pumpkin Pie Spiced Vodka —flavored with spices like crystalized ginger, allspice, and nutmeg—is a great gift to give for the holiday season. Seal it up in a pretty glass jar and fasten a recipe card to the container to complete your homemade gift. At your suggestion, friends and family can experiment with making a Pumpkin Pie Cocktail, which begins with combining 4 cups of whole milk and 1 cup canned pumpkin puree in a medium pot. Stirring constantly with a whisk, let the mixture come to a boil. Remove from the heat and stir in 2 cups of Bailey's Irish Cream and ¾ cup of the spiced vodka. Mix and pour into mugs; top with whipped cream and serve.

Hot Bourbon-Apple Cider

Follow the recipe for traditional apple cider , warming cider, cinnamon sticks, allspice, cloves, and sugar in a saucepan. (Wrap the whole spices in a cheesecloth, if desired, to make it easier to remove from the cider.) Let mixture simmer for 15 minutes before discarding the spices. Into a mug, add 2 ounces of bourbon and then top with the hot cider. Garnish with our cinnamon sticks for extra oomph.
