One of the world’s most popular herbs, chives are a member of the onion family. They have a mild, delicate flavor with less “bite” than their relatives.

Their subtle onion flavor is well suited to savory dishes and recipes where the bite of onions or garlic would be overpowering.

Spice Islands® chives are snipped at the peak of their flavor, then rapidly freeze-dried to capture their vibrant taste, color and texture.

Heat destroys the delicate flavor of chives, so wait to add them until the final five or ten minutes of cooking.

Fun Fact: Chives are called “purlog” in Danish, “kutsay” in Filipino, “kui chaai” in Thai and “la he” in Vietnamese. Their Chinese name translates to “thin, fragrant green onion.”
