Gumbo Filé

Gumbo Filé

Made from the leaves of the sassafras tree, filé powder is often referred to as gumbo filé, since it’s most commonly used to thicken and season gumbo.

Cajun cooks traditionally use one of three methods to thicken gumbo – a roux, okra or gumbo filé. Although, it’s not uncommon to use more than one ingredient or to add gumbo filé as a finishing touch.

Our Spice Islands® gumbo filé has a delicate flavor that can be used to thicken and season a variety of soups and stews. Just make sure not to boil them after adding gumbo filé or it may become stringy.
