One of the oldest known spices, anise has a unique licorice-like flavor. But it’s unique in other ways too. Unlike many spices, anise complements sweet and savory foods equally well.

Originally sourced from the Mediterranean and Egypt, today the most flavorful anise comes from Spain and Turkey, where the arid climate and open stretches create ideal growing conditions.

Fun Fact: Anise was considered so important in 14th century England that it was subject to an import tax. A portion of those taxes were used to maintain the London Bridge.
