Place sliced lemon and 1-1/2 cups sugar in a large mixing bowl or sturdy, gallon pitcher. Mash together with a coffee mug or wooden spoon. Stir in crystalized ginger and broken cinnamon stick. Set aside.
Juice lemons; add to muddled sugar. Pour in water.
Stir and let sit 30 minutes for spiced flavor to develop. Strain into a 2-quart pitcher. Chill until ready to serve.
Optional: Pour a little vodka into a chilled glass with ice. Top with lemonade. Serve immediately.
