Cream of tartar helps give structure and stability to whipped egg whites and adds fluffiness to baked goods like meringues, and is a key ingredient in baking powder. Also known as tartaric acid, it comes from fermented grapes and is collected from the inside walls of wine barrels used during aging. In its raw form it can appear reddish-brown, but it’s refined into a bright white powder, which is how it gets the name “cream of tartar.”

Pure vanilla extract, including the Spice Islands brand, doesn’t really go bad. Thanks to its high alcohol content, it can last for years and years when kept sealed in a cool, dark place. Over time, it may lose some of its flavor and strength or develop a bit of harmless sediment, but it’s still safe to use. If it smells faint or looks slightly cloudy, it’s still fine for baking, just keep in mind the vanilla flavor may not come through as strongly.

Za’atar is a mild, aromatic Middle Eastern spice blend made with sumac, sesame seeds, thyme, and oregano. It has an earthy, nutty, and slightly tangy flavor that makes it versatile in everyday cooking. Commonly used as a finishing seasoning, it’s delicious sprinkled over bread with olive oil, stirred into yogurt, or added to salads and roasted vegetables for extra flavor.

Beau Monde seasoning is a savory, all-purpose spice blend made famous by Spice Islands, and contains salt, dextrose (or sugar), onion powder, and celery seed. First introduced in the 1950s, it’s been a go-to pantry staple for adding subtle depth and flavor. It works well in soups, dips, and vegetables, and also makes a simple, flavorful rub for meats.

Spice Islands spices are manufactured in Ankeny, Iowa, but the ingredients are sourced globally from regions known for producing the highest quality spices. For example, our cinnamon comes from the forests of Vietnam, vanilla from Madagascar, and garlic from California, along with other spices gathered from various countries around the world. Our brand was originally inspired by the Indonesian archipelago (also known as the Maluku Islands) which is famous for its historic spice trade, especially nutmeg and cloves.
